A Roof for Hogar del Niño Feliz Child Care Center

Background

The “Hogar del Niño Feliz” Child Care Center was founded in 1970 and is located in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The Center provides day-care services for children under social risk. The purpose of this service is to ensure their parents the possibility to go to work and improve their quality of life.

Furthermore, there is a professional team that gives integrated assistance to the children needs, in addition to a preventive approach at the family level.

Beneficiary population:

The Center currently attends a total of 100 children, with an age range of 9 months to 12 years old. These children come from marginal urban areas surrounding the Center.

Justification:

The Center does not have a roofed playground where children can play during Costa Rica’s nine month rainy season, which force them to spend most of the time inside the classrooms. The problem here is that this situation eventually generates stress and disobedience among the children.

There is a drain system and grass in the playground, as well as a cemented area in which we plan to build a roof in order to have a place for the children to play during the winter. This roofed area will also be used for special activities arranged for the children’s families.

General Objective:

To build a roofed playground for the “Hogar del Niño Feliz” Child Care Center.

Specific Objectives:

  • To ensure the beneficiary population its right to play and to have a place exclusively for recreation purposes.
  • To prevent health problems among the beneficiary population
  • To comply with the Integrated Assistance Center’s Fitting out Norm from the Ministry of Health, in the sense that we need to provide specific and exclusive areas for the recreation of the beneficiary population.
